White's Ford (C&O Canal NHP)
History: Here, the major part of the Army of Northern Virginia forded the Potomac River into Maryland on September 5-6, 1862, while a Confederate band played "Maryland! My Maryland!" Troops marched north along the C&O Canal towpath toward the Monocacy Aqueduct while cavalry companies remained posted between Poolesville and New Market.
More to Explore: The Potomac River is not only an official American Heritage River recognized for historic and cultural preservation, but also nationally known for its paddling and bass-fishing opportunities.
