National Museum of Civil War Medicine

History: With detailed "immersion" exhibits and a host of Civil War artifacts, this museum tells the story of medical practices from the viewpoint of patients and caregivers alike. The museum shines particular light on the legacy of Dr. Jonathan Letterman, who was in charge of medicine for the Army of the Potomac and developed a system of triage, evacuation, hospital and supply organization that formed the basis for much of modern medicine. At the Battle of Antietam, Letterman cared for the wounded at the Pry House Field Hospital.

More to Explore: The Battle of Antietam in nearby Sharpsburg produced overwhelming casualties, many of whom were evacuated to Keedysville; the Pry House Field Hospital Museum is there. Frederick is home to a large historic district, including the Barbara Fritchie House, and offers numerous cultural activities, shopping, dining and lodging.
