Address:
Old National Pike / West Main Street, Middletown, MD 21769

Turner's Gap

History: As fighting concluded on September 14, 1862, the Confederate Army held this gap, now located within the 10,000-acre South Mountain State Park. To the south are Fox's Gap and Crampton's Gap, both of which also saw intense action. Some of the wounded, including future President Rutherford B. Hayes, were removed to homes and churches in Burkittsville and Middletown.

More to Explore: The Appalachian Trail runs through this remote area along Alt. Rt. 40. Also, allow time to travel out of the mountains, farther along the Antietam Campaign Scenic Byway and over to Boonsboro, where a museum displays Civil War relics.
