Monocacy Aqueduct (C&O Canal NHP)

History: On September 4 and 9, 1862, Confederate troops entertained ideas of destroying the aqueduct to prevent Union soldiers and supplies from moving along the C&O Canal. However, drilling holes into the structure's hard stone proved too difficult. Thus, the original seven-arch, 516-foot-long aqueduct, built between 1829 and 1833, remains today.
