Christ Episcopal Church: Vestrymen Arrested

History: Dora Higgins hid several Union loyalists in this church on June 28, 1863 when Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart aimed to arrest them all. John DeSellum, Judge Bowie and several others sought refuge here. Stuart came to town with a list of Union sympathizers and questioned citizens. Confederate Captain Cissel of Maryland discovered the hidden prisoners by following Dora to the church. Judge Bowie and several others were carried northwest by the Confederates for two days without food or water and were then released unharmed.
