Cashtown Inn: Conference in the Road

Cashtown Inn: Conference in the Road

History: Right in front of the Cashtown Inn is where General Robert E. Lee and General A.P. Hill stood on the morning of July 1, 1863 to discuss the ongoing offensive and their next moves. Just a few miles east of Cashtown, the Battle of Gettysburg raged, and its profound sounds resonated throughout the distant landscape. The Confederate forces passed through Cashtown throughout the day to reinforce their positions. This was not the first time Confederate forces marched past the Cashtown Inn, as its tavern keeper Jacob Mickley remembered clearly from 1862, when he reported damages of $2,000, including the loss of a wagon, a horse, 50 chickens, 100 apple trees, and 480 gallons of Whisky and Brandy.
