Front Royal: Crossroads of War

History: During the Civil War, Front Royal, a "crossroad town" of fewer than 600 residents, was the economic center of Warren County. By the end of the war there was no business or store left open in Front Royal. Front Royal gained notoriety from the female spy Belle Boyd, who came to town as a nurse, but used it as a base for her clandestine activities. She was imprisoned twice and was reported over two dozen times.

More to Explore: At the Northern opening of Shenandoah National Park and the start of Skyline Drive, visitors of Front Royal and the peripheral areas have many opportunities for outdoor excursions, especially during the beautiful fall season. See www.virginia.org and www.civilwartraveler.com for exciting things to see and do on your travels.
