Mile Hill

History: Where the present-day U.S. Rt. 15 Bypass and Business Rt. 15 converge, a surprise cavalry attack led by Confederate Col. Thomas Munford on Sept. 2, 1862, brushed aside Federal forces so General Lee's army could cross the Potomac River into Maryland. Munford's troops later held a key defensive position at Crampton’s Gap during the Battle of South Mountain.

Munford’s men captured 47 Union Soldiers in this battle, while only 7 Confederate soldiers were captured.
