Monocacy National Battlefield (Best Farm)

History: This is the likely site where the famous Lost Order (Special Orders No. 191), detailing General Robert E. Lee's campaign strategy, was found by a Federal private and given to his commander. The information proved valuable during the ensuing Battle of Antietam. Two summers later, this area was the site of "The Battle that Saved Washington." Not only is the historic Best Farm open to the public, but interpretive wayside markers near the parking area provide an overview of the battle.

More to Explore: Best Farm, which comprises the lower third of what was originally a 748-acre plantation known as L’Hermitage, is located just three miles south of Frederick on Rt. 355. Step inside the battlefield's visitor center for programs and exhibits that explain the Lost Order and Battle of Monocacy.
