Fox's Gap

Address:
Intersection of Reno Monument Road and the Appalachian Trail, Boonsboro, MD 21713

Fox's Gap

History: A marker where Reno Monument Road intersects with the Appalachian Trail has a quote from Shakespeare: "Hell is empty and all the devils are here." It aptly describes the fierce fighting in which two generals - one Federal, one Confederate - died at the gap. Nearby Turner's Gap and Crampton's Gap also saw intense action.

More to Explore: Hiking is popular in this beautiful but remote area, which is a key element of the Antietam Campaign Scenic Byway. A history museum in Boonsboro displays local relics. Homes in the picturesque village of Burkittsville were pressed into service as hospitals after the fighting at Crampton's Gap.
