Hyattstown

History: Several engagements occurred between September 8 and 11 in this crossroads town, which became the front line when Confederate cavalry stationed to the north in Urbana clashed with Union cavalry reconnoitering from Clarksburg to the south. The Confederates eventually withdrew northwest with the rest of the army after a heavy exchange of fire damaged the town's houses. The Union VI Corps soon occupied the village.

More to Explore: Located amid a rustic country setting about 25 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., Hyattstown's Little Bennett Regional Park is a big draw for its exceptional hiking, camping, golfing and equestrian opportunities. Among several historic sites within the 3,700-acre park, Hyattstown Mill now houses a center for fine art, literature and cultural heritage.
