Respite at Smithsburg: "An Oasis in the Desert"

History: On July 5, 1863, after spending the day in town celebrating their victory at Gettysburg with a feast and music, Union Cavalry fought an artillery duel here with Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's retreating men. Aside from several houses in Smithsburg being struck by Confederate shells, the skirmish yielded few casualties.
