Brookeville

History: On the night of June 28, 1863, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart arrived in Brookeville from Rockville with three cavalry brigades, 125 captured Union supply wagons, and more than 400 military and civilian prisoners. Stuart's advance was delayed due to prisoners Major James C. Duane and Captain Nathaniel Michler urging Stuart to parole them. The prisoners were not fed, and only white prisoners were allowed to stop for water as they crossed streams. Most civilian prisoners walked home from Brookeville upon release.

More to Explore: Brookeville is surrounded by parks and community pools for outdoor fun. The city of Olney provides plenty of shopping opportunities. Or gain a unique insight into the history of nearby Sandy Spring at the Sandy Spring Museum, which focuses on the town's agrarian history.
